Level 1 A:
Consists of 50 objective type questions to be answered in 1:50 hours duration. The
questions will be on Reasoning and Research aptitute (refer syllabus)
Level 1 B:
Consists of 50 objective type questions, on the subject opted by the candidates,
to be answered in 1:50 hours duration. Refer respective subject syllabus.
Will comprise of 3 sections : (Duration - 3 hours)

Section A - Short answer
type questions - this section will have 10 questions and each question is to be
Section B - Medium answer
type questions - this section will have 3 questions and each question is to be answered
Section C - Short answer
type questions - this section will have 1 questions and each question is to be answered
Negative Marking will apply for the Level 1 A and Level 1 B tests which have Objective
Type of questions.
Exemption from Level 1 : Candidates who have qualified the
National Education Test (NET) of the University Grants Commission (UGC)
shall be exempt from the Level 1 Test.
Exemption from Level 1 & Level 2 :
The following categories of candidates shall be exempt from the Level 1 and Level
2 Tests, both :
a. All candidates selected by the UGC or the Council of Scientific
and Industrial Research (CSIR) for their Junior Research Fellowship (JRF), subject
to the validity norms of the respective fellowship.
b. Candidates for D.Phil in the Department of Electronics and Communication
with M.Tech. in Electronics Engineering (or equivalent subjects). Note that Computer
Science is not included in the equivalent subject for Electronics Engineering.
c. Candidates for D.Phil. in the Department of Earth and Planetary
Sciences with M.Tech. in Geology/Applied Geologyr or 'Geo-Physics' (or equivalent
d. Candidates for D.Phil. in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences
with M.Sc. in Geology /Applied Geology or Geo-Physics (or equivalent subjects) who
have valid GATE score before the last date of applying for CRET and have a GATE
Score of not less than 75%.
e. Serving Army ,Navy and Airforce Officers with not less than
15 years of service and holding the rank of Colonel in the Army, or equivalent rank
in the Air Force/Navy,who are applying for D.Phil. in Defence and Strategic Studies
are exempted from Level 1 and Level 2,both, and be seperately assessed at
level 3 against a specified number of vacancies.
